Looking at 33’ travel trailer, dry weigh 6635, hitch weight 840, will have payload of 300 lbs . Will have a 1000lb fastway (trunnion) weight distribution hitch with sway bars. Payload in ranger will be 800 lbs. Thoughts on this set up?

You are getting into Super Duty range with that trailer. Just the hitch weight will take up most of your payload.

I wouldn't pull that trailer with a Ranger. I have a travel trailer weighing about 4,300 dry and 23' long and wouldn't want to tow anything larger than this with my Ranger. The truck is too light for anything larger. It will pull you all over the road and you won't like towing in any wind for sure. If I were you I would either look at a smaller trailer or a larger truck.

You're using the term "payload" in different ways, and it's confusing. In the first case, it looks like you're describing the "remaining payload" for your truck after subtracting the 840 lb hitch weight. If correct, that means you probably won't have enough for anything except you and one passenger, assuming you're below the average weight of most Americans.

Regardless, that's just too much trailer. Only the max towing capacity fits, barely, within the Ranger's limits. You'll be at or beyond your other limits.

Tongue weight alone is 100lb over the max allowed tongue weight. Will only keep getting worse once you add the weight of the hitch itself and anything inside the trailer beyond its dry weight.

I personally would not tow a 33' travel trailer with a Ranger. The truck is way to light to handle that big of a trailer. Travel trailers are really big wind sails. You will be pushed all over the road by cross winds and passing trucks. I tow my 28' with an F250 and would not use anything less.

Like others mentioned, this is 3/4 ton truck territory. Half-ton trucks like the F150 barely have more payload than a Ranger and you will be over tongue weight or payload or both. You listed the dry weight, but the ready to travel weight will be significantly above that and thus bringing the hitch weight even higher than it already is, probably close to 1000lbs-1100lbs with propane tanks, batteries and the junk in the front storage compartment.

You are above the max allowed tongue weight for the Ranger (750lbs), close to max payload with no passengers or gear in the truck. You can either downsize the travel trailer, or up-size the truck.

I have a 3400 pound Rpod trailer, and I wouldn't try towing anything heavier with my Ranger.

I think you're overly conservative by a lot. You're definitely on the safe side, but at less than half the rated capacity, there's still a huge margin of additional safety.

The problem most folks run into is NOT the trailer weight, but hitch weight and especially payload. It is easy to hit other maximum ratings before the trailer weight hits your towing capacity.

Could you please let me know what brand and model your traioer is and how far you have towed with it? I am in the process of looking for a trailer and have zeroed in on the Salem FSX 163RDSK which is 4299lb UVW and rated 5615lb GVWR and is 22'11" long. Got a 24 Lariat 2.7L w/extra tow pkg. This is just one of two I am considering and am getting different feedback from various sources. Would prefer input from those who have towed something similar with it.

It's a 2024 Salem FSX 178BHSK, so very similar to what you are looking at. The farthest I have towed it is about a 3 hour drive and a ferry ride to Kelleys Island OH. My Ranger does the job but I would not go any larger than this, and I don't think I would pull it through the mountains.

Thanx for the info. Was thinking about the smokies - not the rockies. Do you have the 2.7l or 2.3?

I'll chime in. I'd feel fine towing that trailer ... BUT ... Watch your payload. Your truck will have a payload of about 1350 lbs. If your hitch weight is 10% of the gross weight, it will be about 560 lbs, leaving about 700 lbs for you, passengers, stuff in the bed, etc. That's probably enough, but things add up quickly. Be sure to consider the weight of the hitch itself, which can add up for weight distribution hitches.

If your hitch weight is 15% of the gross weight, you'll be in excess of the max hitch weight (750 lbs) for the truck.

The overall weight can easily be handled, especially with the 2.7. It's the other weight limitations that will get you.
