Instrument Cluster Failed

I bet they have to send it out to a third party shop. I know with FORSCAN and probably any dealership level scan tool, they can only adjust mileage up, not down as they do not want the dealership being tempted to do illegal mileage rollbacks.

By Federal Law, they either have to put a replacement in with same mileage or one at zero miles and slap a sticker label on the left door frame with the vehicle mileage at replacement annotated. The latter you want to avoid.

I did some research this morning and it looks like you can change the configuration with Forscan as well. I sent that information over the Service Dept lead this morning, so will see what they get back to me with.

Hopefully this is the fix.

Where is vehicle milage recorded? Is it in the instrument cluster or in the ECU?
Somewhere at some time I read that milage is recorded and stored in the ECU, and that a cluster swap would update its reading with data from the ECU.
Years back, it was impossible to swap clusters without the dealer pairing the new to the trucks ECU.

Odometer are now their own module, but tied closely to the PCM if I remember correctly. They should match. The display should be just that... a display. So OP has either had his mileage converted to Km, or the dealer hasbeen having a lot of joy rides in his truck.

The service dept lead said that the mileage data is now stored in the PCM. Here is a picture of what their diagnostic tool was showing for the truck.

So they bumped the mileage up in your PCM?

Most new vehicles record the mileage separately in the PCM and cluster. The cluster generally is not just reporting what the PCM has.

No, they said they didn’t change anything. I think it’s due to how the IC is reading the data from PCM.

Some variation of this seems likely - it's far too coincidental that Miles to Kilometers conversion matches your displayed values.

Agreed - just hoping there is a way to convert it back to miles within the IC software.

First choice would be to correct to actual miles of course.

If it is related to a mile/kilometer conversion/discrepancy, I'd also want to make sure going forward 1 mile = 1 mile at the PCM and display, and not 1 mile = 1.609 miles on either. Otherwise, 5yr/60,000mi would show expired after only 37,290 actual miles.

Great advice, I’ll be making sure I am not accruing miles that are being calculated as if they were KMs, that would be awful . I think that is what is happening though. I noticed in the app that the truck has 3 more miles on it today than it did yesterday and I doubt they drove it around 3 miles.

Just heard from the Local Service Dept - I will need a new instrument cluster because they cant reprogram the odometer back to Miles vs Kilometers and are not authorized to use something like Forscan to re-configure it.

I also learned that the PCM no longer tracks the mileage on a vehicle, that data is set within the Instrument Cluster for the Ranger Raptor.

can confirm the odometer is stored in the cluster. I just upgraded mine form 8 to 12", and the odometer was replicated in the new one prior to installation. Also, look at the engine life, cause mine got 0'ed. everything else is as before, including settings. but only things programmed before installation in the new cluster were odometer, VIN and drive modes

So it sounds like the replacement Instrument Cluster was programmed incorrectly initially and they couldnt go back and fix it.

Oh well. I am going through the Lemon Law process with Ford now, so I wont be seeing this truck again.
