After waiting for a long time, my dealer says engineering from Ford communicated to them that 1) the foam pad behind the cab should be there, 2) it is there for sound deadening, 3) it frequently comes loose, 4) the fix is to pull the bed and reinstall new foam !!

This sounds kind of crazy - like to hear what others have found out about this.

Update: service department said -yes, only halfway across - on driver side- I must have misundersood. Frequently comes loose like mine because wasn't fastened well at factory.

Parts department now tells service department they can't order new pad because there is no part # for it.

Yes it was mentioned in a much earlier thread that there was no part# for it. There must be a ton of them in the landfills though based on the number of members here that removed them.
I decided to leave it in place and wait for confirmation of its purpose. I figured it would be for noise suppression.

What I have experienced is that snow and ice will collect on top of the foam. Overnight the captured water will refreeze and make all kinds of unsettling noises in the cab due to cab and bed flexing slightly when driving next day. Took me a while to figure out what the noise was.

So how can you have a part on your truck and Ford doesn't have a part number for it ?

Mine is hanging off as well. If it makes the doors easier to close when it’s off I’d rather leave it off

How did you remove it? Did you have to loosen the bed bolts, or did it just pull out?
