I’m a “form follows function” kind of guy, and I always have been. And I’m also an adamant believer in the aphorism, “take care of your machine and it’ll take care of you.”
And so with this mindset I’ve been going about adding thing and doing things to my Ranger to maintain and preserve it for the long haul. I ceramic-coated it not so it’s shiny-looking, but to protect the paint. I added lanolin undercoating to prevent rust. In the cabin I added a screen protector, and I’ve been wanting to add a center console cover to prevent the top from wearing through (the way my Mercedes e-class did after a decade or so). Sure, it needs to look good, but honestly my bigger concern was getting something with a sloppy fit like a disposable shower cap. If the console cover slid around when I rested my arm on it, it would be in the trash within a week.
Muslogy just came out with a sandstone center console cover recently and I put one in my Ranger. I obviously can’t speak to the durability of it after only a few days, but I’ll share my initial thoughts. First, this is a simple thing and it was simple to install. It has two elastic straps and you just slide the cover over the console lid. During the “installation” I did notice that the color wasn’t a perfect match, but more on this in a moment. Once it was on the first thing I did was try to slide it around, and I’m pleased to say that it stays put, and has done so during normal day to day use. It’s comfortable to rest my arm on and doesn’t move around, so this alone makes me a happy customer. I did notice during install that it could be a bit longer though; from the front seats it looks fine and you’d have to put your head unnaturally low to see that it’s a cover, but from the backseat it’s pretty obvious. But going back to my “form follows function” mindset, I’m not bothered in the slightest by this. And circling back to the color: the front seats have a fabric on the sides near the center console that’s a different beige than the sandstone color, so the slightly imperfect match of this cover actually doesn’t stand out at all. In fact, in some lighting conditions it looks perfect, while in others it stands out no more or less than other sandstone materials in the cabin. While the color does blend in, what stands out is the embroidery on top that matches the design of the air vents. It’s a nice touch that really makes the cover look like it belongs in the Ranger, and it’s not just a cheap one-size-fits-all accessory. One last thought: with the cover on it very slightly rubs against the seat sides as you open or close the console. Just enough to prevent the lid from popping open by itself when you press the release button, but not enough to cause undue wear or anything.
This might seem like a lot to write about a console cover, but the truck means a lot to me, and I do plan to have it a long time. I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about accessories and such, and this is one that seems like it will protect a high-touch area in the cabin without detracting from my enjoyment of it, all while managing to look pretty darn good, imho.
