I usually put together a small roadside kit for my vehicles since I have to make 1-3 8 hour trips a year to make the pilgrimage back to the motherland. For those that do the same, or augment what is already included with the truck any thoughts or ideas?

So far im thinking:
  • A kinetic Rope
  • Soft shackles
  • Emergency Blanket / Normal blanket
  • Jump Starter
  • Tire inflater

I try to keep some water bottles in my vehicle emergency kit.

Basic tools like a cheap ratchet set also are great to keep stowed away.

I have hard shackles hanging from my rear recovery points plus a recovery strap, inflator, extra strong duct tape, traction boards, shovel, and a 5 gallon gas can in the bed on long trips.

In the cab I typically carry a very well stocked first aid kit, tissues, towel, emergency poncho and blankets, about 64oz of water per person traveling, and blankets or sleeping bags in the cab. And gum... always carry gum. Add bear spray for trips in bear country.

For the stuff in the bed how are you securing it?

Most of the stuff is in a milk crate which, along with the gas can, are secured with a ratcheting strap run between the bed tie down hoops. I also have bolted some hooks and hook/loop fasteners (like for extension cables) to the front and side bed walls, using the provided holes and captured nuts, for hanging the shovel(s) and traction boards. Those can kinda be seen in some older posts of mine from around May or early June.

Edit: you can easily fit the recovery strap and tape in the passenger side cubby under the rear seat, but I typically have my extra ratchet straps in there. Never know when you need might straps for securing a load.

Currently in the summer:

  • Milwaukee M12 Tire Inflator
  • Jumper cables
  • 30 foot kenetic rope with soft shackles
  • Cheapo harbor freight toolset
  • Adjustable hammer
  • Zip ties
Will probably toss my Milwaukee impact under the seat during the winter, because screw using a tire iron when it is cold out.

I have a cheapo harbor freight packout copy in the bed ratchet strapped down to the tie downs. Very useful to keep stuff out of the cab (why did Ford have to put that support under the rear seats)
