Hi - did you have to raise the truck or put it on a set of ramp to remove the skid plate?
I have a set of Harbor Freight ramps that cost like 70 dollars, but they are probably not needed. I just like having the space to move around. You could probably buy the ramps, oil, filter, and 27mm socket (or 1 1/16 socket) for less money than it would cost to pay for one oil change.

I didn’t raise mine, but I have slight depression in my drive where gravel meets concrete. It worked OK, but raising it would be recommended.

Did my first change this afternoon at 3k and converted over to Amsoil and a Wix filter. I used my oil extractor and managed to pull every bit of 6qt out of it (took a couple of tries to position the hose at the right point in the pan) so this seems like a very viable option for us and will keep us from having to remove skid plates and such.

I recently did an oil change on my with about 1,000 miles on it. As others have mentioned, the oil splashes onto the cross member which was annoying. But it was fairly straight forward. Here are some photos of the factory oil filter cut a apart. There is a lot less "glitter" than I expected with some very small bits of silicone in between the pleats.

OK, thanks everyone. Changed it today at 500 miles. Canister filter was no issue. BUT the volume of oil due to that large drain plug was startling. All done. Easy peasy. Used Motorcraft 5W30 and Motorcraft filter for this change.
Next I'll do it again at 5000 miles.
I just changed mine yesterday at about 650 miles. I controlled the oil flow by not fully removing the plug until a substantial amount of oil was drained. It required patience, but worked fine.

I had considered getting a Ronin plug, but the approach I used was fine so I'll use stock plugs changed every other time.

Also, a 27 mm socket is a bit rare, but you may have a 1 1/16 at the house that will work. I can't remember the size for the bash plate removal, but that was a normal size metric so you probably have that.
15mm

I like the idea of the Ronin plug, what I don’t like about it is that it appears to leave about 1/4” of oil in the oil pan. I guess one could remove it each time…

I looked at that Ronin plug, seems to work well. But what I need, and other FX4 owners, is a remote drain system as to not have to remove the skid plate.

If you have the 2.7L, get a vacuum extractor and you won't have to go under the truck at all. My trusty old Pela 650 pulled dang near all of the oil out of the sump and the residual oil out of the filter housing all while I was prepping the new filter and o-rings.
