possibly a stupid question but if i plan on getting a bed rack to add a rooftop tent on should i be looking into getting a J-brace?
The criteria seems to be if the expected load on the bed is above 88 lbs and you're going to offroad some, then yes, j braces are needed.

Can I follow up with another stupid question... If I'm planning on just putting on a roll up tonneau cover, do I need these J braces?

That does not seem to meet the criteria of needing the J-Brace installed.

I have an RR and ordered the J-Braces. It took me 2+ hours to install one side and about 1 hour to do the other side.

I found the only tricky part was drilling out a single 1/4" rivet. To replace the rivet on reassembly, I did have to buy a $29.00 1/4" rivet gun since the rivet gun in my toolbox was too small. But any project that gives me an excuse to buy a new tool, is worth doing myself.
Quick question - what jack points did you use, assuming you removed rear wheels? I'm preparing for the install and pondering how best to use a jack and jackstands.

You don't need to remove the tires. Admittedly, that would make it easier, but I did the whole project with the tires on.

I wonder if this is ONE of the reasons they put a quality hold on some of the early builds. My RR was built on 04/24 and has not moved in over two months.

Not hating on the dealership I took my truck to but I had them install the J-brace last week and had to go back to the dealership shortly after dropping off my truck to show them where to install it... they first tried to convince me that I didn't need this part that I had already ordered to their dealership from the ford parts site and then they tried to install it in rear of the truck bed (behind the rear wheel) and told me it didn't fit. I had to read through their confusion and show them where it goes. Nevertheless got it installed in the end. Best of luck to everyone out there getting theirs installed I wish u a better experience.

How long did you wait for the J-bracket after ordering? Mine has said partially received for over a month.

So unsurprising. The GM at my dealer was shaking his head in disbelief and tried to dismiss what I was saying when I told him my plans for a wedge camper shell on the bed, as if there would be no possible way a ford provided part would be required. They don't research and don't know, they're focused on moving volume of vehicles... As mentioned even though I have a line item for them to cover labor in my sale, I'm installing them myself.

I received the raptor bracket kit 3 days after ordering.

First time I ordered the J Brace and installation was May 13. That order was cancelled by Ford in mid June. Ordered again on 4 July, and it is showing as partially in transit. I intend on putting a Ford branded power tonneau cover on it, but want to get the J brace installed first, just to be safe. Will see what happens this time.

since mine was delayed shipping to the dealership and I already had my GFC camper installed and was about to do an offroad trip... I was about to tell them to give me the part. issue a refund for the labor and take it home to install it myself reluctantly. I knew I could do it I just really didn't want to that myself since working with trim pieces and plastic clips is the bane of my existence hahaha
