The certificate for the tune is tied to a Ford Performance account. If Ford Performance updates the tune, you'll need the credentials to the Ford Performance account that was used to download the tune to get the update (and re-install on the ecu).
If you don't have the access to the account, you'll have to purchase the tune again.

Maybe the dealer can work with FP to avoid the additional charge, maybe the dealer is organized and keeps track of the credentials, but I'd feel better knowing the FP account is in my name and email and I have the ability to retrieve the credentials.

At a minimum, I'd create a Ford Performance account and when it's time to have the dealer/ase tech install the tune, change the password temporarily and give the tech your credentials.
Thanks, that makes sense to do that…appreciate the heads up!

Not sure that presenting options is meant to be other than information shared, not a criticism of one way other the other....although it may seem that people are taking or presenting those opinions as the only one a reasonable person would chose
Yeah, I know it isn’t always meant as criticism and respect others bringing their input into the discussion. I wasn’t just referring to this thread but what I’ve seen on other forums and online in general…this topic of DIY vs dealer seems to always bring out strong opinions.

I built both of these including tunes and a lot of Forscan mods no issues with warranty, this thread does have me thinking of have my dealer do it. Can’t believe I just said that!

I should have my Ford Performance Procal tuner early next week and I have a dealership that will do the install. Can anyone explain to me what, if anything, I should do before I take it into the dealership for the install. Should I create an account with Ford Performance and register it? Does it matter if it's registered with Ford vs Ford Performance? Can I download the necessary files and have them on the tuner before taking it in to have it installed? I want to avoid running up my shop time ($) but also don't want to throw any kinks into the process that would confuse or delay the installer. Thanks for any input!

You can perform every task up to "Installing Performance Calibration into the vehicle" on page 3 of the install PDF. Have the dealership mechanic or ASE mechanic...whichever route you go...start on page 3. Make sure you get an install work order/repair order with all your vehicle and owner information after the job is complete. Email the paperwork to fwrnty@ford.com. You will get a confirmation email back.

Not sure what you are considering the certificate you may mean the voucher ID that comes with the tool. I had a Ford Performance account even before I got the 2.3 tune and in the 5 years I had my Lariat the tune was never updated. My dealer (on my 2.3 tune and Raptor tune) was perfectly happy only doing the last step which actually transfers the tune from the tool to the truck and count that as doing the installation.

However once someone has a FP account and the software is downloaded to someone's computer, the install instructions indicate when you connect the tool to the computer :
Program should connect automatically with programmer displaying serial number,
firmware version number, and automatically check for updates.
IMO that indicates that if you have a FP account and there would be an update should work the same way and you wouldn't need the dealer.

Lots of opinions and many related threads. I used an ASE Master, did everything but actual install, used dealer same way on my '19. Already had a Ford Performance account from when I got the tune for my '19 and want the FP account on my computer.

Ok, thanks for all the advice. I have the tuner in hand, updated it via my PC and the software, married it to my truck, backed up the stock calibration file onto the unit, connected to the server and verified the VIN and allowed it to backup the stock cal and download the procal file. I'm at the point where it should be ready for the tech to proceed with the install.

I have to admit, it is REALLY hard not to just proceed with the install LOL If the dealership gives me any grief about doing the above steps, that might just happen. I know, but what about the warranty :)

Find a ASE tech, should be easy, offer cash to do final step, I paid 1/3 of what dealer wanted. I made a document in Publisher documenting they did the install with Master Tech's signature, date, VIN, etc.

Any chance you can share the document? would be easier to just change everything to fit mine then start from scratch and get it wrong.

I was going by memory from long discussion on the Bronco forum, hashing out what is tied to which. Members told me they have gotten tune updates (not Bronco, it was new).

It boiled down to, you should know which FP account the tune is tied to, and preferably have control over that account so you don't have to rely on whichever business did the install. What if they shut down permanently?
Ford is hit or miss with customer service, but do you want to spend all that time proving you are the rightful owner and getting some unknown number of customer support people to fix it all?

TLDR: you should know that there is a FP account tied to the tune and you should ask your installer about how they handle that.

I did the tune on my Bronco because that is my project car to play with mods. Ford Corp incentivizes dealers to deny warranty claims by having the ability to deny the claim by the dealer and charge the dealer back for the repair. Which dealer wants to be stuck with a $10k engine repair bill?
And everyone throwing around the magnuson-moss act like it's some magical phrase that will make a dealer or Ford do an about-face and approve your claim has never had to deal lawsuits. They take lots of time and lots of money. Maybe the dealer and Ford will back down before lawyers are involved, but your vehicle is sitting immobilized for a month(s) while you're fighting.

I have very little interest in the discussion about tune warranty or who installs which inevitably all these threads devolve to. The OP asked about what to know before getting a tune installed and I felt it important to attempt to reiterate the connection to a FP account.

Thanks for listening.

Great take on getting the dealer to do the right thing. :)

Thank you, received. Not sure why I was thinking it was more involved.
It was all I could think of. Not sure what else you'd include. The only other thing that is pertinent is the Voucher ID but once you use that to do the downloads you never need it again and doesn't really pertain to warranty.
