Hi all,
Like many of you, I was frustrated that our bed/ cargo lights don't come on when you unlock the vehicle. I wanted to share an easy/cheap solution I came up with that works pretty well.
I wasn't interested in any hard-wired bed lighting kits since I may get a hard canopy down the line. What I came across is the Shocker Hitch RHR AA Battery Powered Truck Bed Cargo LED Lights, 18". $27 bucks on amazon.
There are several similar offerings from Agri-cover and TruXedo on the market, but what I like about the RHR lights is you don't need a screwdriver to swap out the AA batteries - you just flip open the latches which takes 2 seconds.
They have 3 modes: On with 5 minute auto shut-off, ON, and Off.
The control box and lights come with 3M VHB double-sided tape, so the installation was super simple. I wanted this tucked out of the way, so I opted to attach both the box and light strip to the underside of my TruXedo Sentry CT tonneau cover bed rails.
One "mod" I did was shorten the wire between the box and the light so I didn't have excess wire hanging down. To achieve this without cutting anything, I folded the wire back on itself to get the desired length and then slipped a piece of heat shrink tubing over it. Pic below.
No, it's not the brightest light out there, but it's WAY better than a pitch-black bed at night.
