I too have been noticing the same sound coming from truck on a cold start that many here are talking and sharing videos about. So out of paranoia I brought my truck into Ford, had them keep it over night, and asked them to do a diagnostic cold start in the morning. I also showed the tech some of the videos that people are sharing. I picked up the truck this morning and was told the following. He said that what ā€œweā€ are hearing in most cases, but not all are the Turbo Waste Gates. He said this is normally the first thing you will hear on a cold start up and that they do make that ā€œ rattlingā€ bad cam phaser ā€œtypeā€ sound for a second or two and then it goes away. If you do a web search about cam phaser vs waste gate sound you will see it is common for people to get the two confused. I’m sure there are those that really do have bad cam phasers, but in my situation he said my engine sounded perfect and no need to worry about it. Hopefully others are in the same situation and just being over precautions. He said the issues with the bad cam phasers really are a thing of the past for the most part and that he has not seen a cam phaser issue recently on the 3 L eco-boost engine. Especially, on a 2024 model. Take my report for what it’s worth, but I figured I would share because I too was very worried about it.

This is interesting. I’m assuming they diagnosed it correctly and with a listening scope. But maybe not. Wonder if anyone with aftermarket waste gates have a similar sound.

Hopefully that is the case and isn’t an issue. Does seem crazy that so many of us have the noise with different build dates. Time will tell though😬

So I just got my truck back last night and started this morning. That’s Nov 5th to Dec 13th in the shop and 2 engine out services.

This time around they replaced the entire timing assembly, chains and all. In the notes the tech said the chains were way looser than he was expecting. I found that interesting.

Is there still a little noise? Yes. Compared to my previous videos, less. I think I’m going to let it ride and see what happens.

It's short like my truck. Just dropped it off for a oil srevice and ask them to listen.

Well let me tell you about my ordeal, cam phasers started making noise at 10k miles, took it into the dealer to check the issue, they agreed to replace the cam phasers, second night at the dealer, my drivers side window gets smashed in and radar detector taken, couple weeks go by received a call from the dealer, had a hiccup we are putting a new engine in, come to find out the tech broke off one of the bolts inside the cam. Just received my truck back today, been a little over a month.
