Every Day on first cold start since new ! , Little background engine machinist/ builder for a fleet of 3200 diesel- and gas-powered vehicles for 35 years. Some people think it's a waste of time. I think it's not but that's me .

I do to fill the oil filter housing. I also do a short crank every time I start the truck to fill the top end.

How do you use crank? Mine fires up as soon as I turn the key.

I guess I'm missing something here. What is the point of doing this? It's not like everything in the engine goes dry instantly when you shut it off and turning the engine over with the starter for however long you're doing it is adding wear to the starter and circulating oil in the same fashion that starting the engine does.

If there is any benefit, I'm guessing its so minimal over the life of an engine that its barely worth discussing.

I can see doing this on a new engine, but one that's just been run and had the oil changed would still have residual lubricant in the top end.

I can't remember the arguments I read when looking into this myself, but I recall there being benefits.

It for sure pressurizes the system. If you start after an oil change without doing this and have the oil pressure gauge up, it'll be 0 for a number of seconds.

I think the better question is does it hurt anything to do it ? They added it as a feature, so why not.

I changed my oil recently, for the first time on my 2.3, and wondered if i should prefill the filter. I was really listening during the startup and heard nothing out of sorts. I've also read up on wear related to startups after oil changes and different ways to negate it. The bottom line for me, is there isnt any wear caused after oil changes . even f you just start the vehicle. But yeah, a crank start should lend some peace of mind if you really are worried about it.

You're not dry starting the motor after an oil change or after winter storage. There is a residual oil film on all mating parts and it does it's job for the 3 seconds it takes for full prime.
Why prolong the process by trying to prime with the starter motor. That doesn't make sense.

I've only ever primed the oiling system after doing a complete rebuild.

Maybe we're looking for a solution to a problem that doesn't exist.

Cam phasers is a real issue. One of the software updates on my wife’s Expedition for cam phasers made it crank a few times when you push the start button. Previously it fired instantly like the Rangers. Cam phasers going out on the 3.5L Ecoboost are well documented and tend to happen more often on vehicles that sit for longer durations.

That was an attempt to mask an issue, not to fix it.

This makes me think of the old Mobil 1 commercial, when it was first introduced, which featured a yellow cab filled with synthetic oil (Mobil 1), drained, and driven around with no ill effects because of the residual coating on the motor parts. Oils have come a long ways.
