24 Ranger xlt brake hold question

Hey I’m new here. I just picked up a 24 Ranger xlt a couple weeks ago. I’ve had the pleasure of putting a couple hundred miles on it since then.

Recently I turned on the brake hold feature. However, I’ve noticed that it doesn’t activate when coming to a stop until I apply extra brake pressure. If I don’t do that it will never engage the brake hold. I also noticed that my brakes feel kind of weak. I really have to apply pressure to get the truck to stop.

So yesterday I had to drop my truck off at the dealer for something and they gave me a Maverick hybrid as a rental for a day. While I drove that truck I noticed that it’s brake hold engages immediately as soon as the truck stops with minor brake pressure. The brakes on the Maverick were also very touchy. I barely had to push the peddle down to get the truck to stop.

So I'm curious if anyone on here has experience with this and could explain why there would be this discrepancy between these two vehicles. Is this just normal for the Ranger?

I don't use the brake hold feature - but I did try it out when I first got mine over 18months ago. I don't remember needing to add extra pressure to get it to enable, just come to a complete stop like normal and a green light would appear in on the dash screen indicating it was holding.

The Ranger would probably be a lot heavier than the Maverick, so I would expect you would need to lean on the brakes more to get it to pull up as you would feel the weight maybe pushing you along more... however I wouldn't say mine feels the way you're describing yours. The new Rangers have an upgraded brake booster system from last gen, so the brake pedal should feel confident at least... I think it might be worth having the dealer or a mechanic look at it - could be something up with the booster or even air in the brakelines??

I dont have to apply extra pressure to set mine either. I use it all the time so i am sure of that.

I read that the brakes were a major complaint on the newest ranger body style but i have no complaints. They are different than my 04 ranger brakesand my wife's 19 wrangler brakes but they are all different vehicles so i expect that.

My Ranger is the same. It may just be a byproduct of a squishy brake pedal.

I haven't noticed any brake issues. I have not tried the brake hold yet.
I have about 300 miles on mine so far.

Never crossed my mind to even see if I have that feature on my 24; not even really sure what it's purpose would be outside of a manual transmission...but I digress.

I do find the brakes a bit underwhelming on my 24 XLT 2.7 and I was honestly a bit concerned before I towed a 5k lb trailer. Not sure if it was the added braking by the trailer or additional heat in the pads making them work better but I at least didn't feel unsafe towing. I will definitely be switching away from the factory pads, probably sooner than later, to try and get a better feel under normal driving and more confidence towing.

I like the auto hold feature a lot!.I have arthritis in my ankle and get uncomfortable when stopped at light for a few minutes. It is suprisingly smooth. I havent felt like I needed to apply extra brake pressure. I dont notice anything when coming to a stop.Its also very smooth when accelerating but when creeping in to a parking spot (wall in front)I need to be careful. The brakes will lock and I may not have much room to inch forward so I have to be gentle on the throttle and be ready to brake in those kind of situations...
