Hello!

A local dealer here in SoCal originally quoted me $10k above sticker. I managed to bring it down to $4k.

Thoughts?

Don’t bash me for agreeing to pay the mark up. At least it’s not $10k.

Disclaimer: I just placed an order and can back out at any time. I don’t plan to.

Hey, if your got the money to spend on that, then do it. No one here will judge you for it. I probably wouldn't because I'm already at the top of my budget and don't really want to reward these dealers.

It's not guaranteed, but if you wait for them to be more regularly produced, you should be able to get it for MSRP. If you want to get it earlier than that is the costs. But thr fact that they were charging 10k markup and able to drop it to 4k without a fight is kind of a sign that you're just paying for the early hype.

Hype is expensive!

Yeah man, I’m far from a millionaire but I’ve been wanting this truck ever since it released overseas.

And there was some squabbling to get it
down to $4k.

Thanks for the advice!

We’ll see what happens.

I wouldn't because I think it's dumb but if you got the money and happy go for it. You are the only one that needs to be happy with the price, not us.

Thats completely up to you. Somethings worth is what ever you two parties mutually agree to. If you want it that bad, go for it. It's your $$

The thing that is weighing on my mind is will Ford raise the price.?

If you order now and pay over MSRP to get what you want, what is the difference between that and waiting a year and paying MSRP…but the MSRP is higher…

$10k over MSRP is pretty crazy, but a few thousand may not be any different than MSRP next year.

I am on the fence with this.

Nope I wouldn't pay over MSRP because if people stopped buying over sticker they would no longer ask it. I don't need a truck that bad to put the value upside down because of a markup.

Well worst case scenario is that I can back out of it anytime I want. I’m not obligated to buy. This dealer is pretty flexible. Let’s just say I have an order placed and we’ll see what happens when these units start to ship.

actually, now that I think about it. You have a pretty good plan. Order what you want and then when it comes in you can make the final decision on buying it. Nothing wrong with that plan.

Everything in life is worth the value you give it. The extra money you're paying is for exclusivity, being one of the first to have something a lot of others want, and convenience (of not doing harder work to find a dealer that won't mark up - it's not always easy and can be time consuming unless you live nearby a dealer that is on the more moral side). It's really no one else's say. You're justifying your action by mentioning it's only $4K when it was originally $10K. And that's fine if that's what you believe and what you want. At the end of the day, you're the one living with the payment, or cost of what you agreed upon for the truck. Now is it a wise decision? That's another discussion altogether.

Supply and demand is Economics 101, logic states there is a low supply of Ranger Raptor's so the demand is high and cost goes up because some dealers recognize people will pay it. The only thing that would curb people paying more than they need to is if the manufacturer stepped in and made all dealerships comply. Can't rely on buyers to not buy at mark-up, someone will always want the latest and greatest and will be willing to pay premium for it, it's human nature. Ford can "talk" all they want but really they're just slapping their less moral dealerships on the wrist like their star NBA player that did something wrong but the team needs them to win or profit.

I hear you. There are many reasons for me diving in head first to get this truck. Most of them are personal. The main reason being this is going to be my first, new, “built-to-my-spec”vehicle purchase. Every other car I’ve purchased was used.

Sure, I can wait until the hype dies down and the mark ups disappear. But like you said, “…it’s time consuming…” and I’d rather pay the mark up to spend that time enjoying the truck.

All of your points are valid so thanks for chiming in.

As I stated before, this dealer is flexible so ultimately it’s my choice to buy or walk away.

Personally not worth it. There's a reason msrp is on the sticker- it's the worth of the car given by the manufacturer. $4k is a lot of money you could use for other things, that actually benefit you in some way and is not used to pay dealer owners kids college tuition (best case scenario lol). I'd look for msrp dealership. They are out there, you just might have to put in some work, but it's worth the $4k.

In an ideal world, everyone would stop paying these gouger prices and the greedy dealers would stop charging it. But it is a free economy so you can do what you want to do.

But look at it another way... you pay $4k over MSRP... you drive it off the lot. You get t-boned a mile down the road. Your insurance may buy you a new truck... but you are instantly out that $4k because they sure are not going to pay you that extra.

Howdy!

New member here. In my neck of the woods (Jersey Shore), dealers are asking $5k-$10k over sticker. I was able to negotiate down to $1k over sticker through a dealer I've been doing business with for over 10 years. They let me build their solitary allocation with priority code 20. Now I just have to wait. It does seem that a relationship with a dealer does help.

Yes pretty much. It helps if you show enough effort by actually walking in to the dealership and speaking to them on a personal level instead of fishing by email or phone.

Luckily they’re literally a couple blocks away from me.
