I have the factory running boards on my Lariat but didn't like how low they hung down. I had a friend cut out 2" from the mounts and weld them back together. I think they look much better. They now tuck up tighter to the bottom of the body. Everything bolted back together with no misalignment. I also included a picture without the boards installed.

The gapped space is to allow flexing of the running boards along with if you hit something it should allow the board to bend without hurting the car since these arent rock rails. If you didnt leave space between the body and the rail it self, its going to trap moisture over time and will be come a rust point.

The factory boards hang so low, I am probably going to remove them (unless I install a roof rack). Plus they bang my calf as I exit the vehicle - very annoying. I like this mod, but don't have a friend who is a skilled welder, lol.

Great mod to utilize the factory boards. I just pulled mine off and went with some Rb20’s. Not cheap but adjustable and made like a tank.

Sounds like a good excuse to buy a welder. :)

As you can see by the pictures there is still room for them to flex if needed. I did not want them tight against the body.
Living on a gravel driveway tends to kick up quite a bit of rocks and they still provide the coverage to the lower portions of the doors.
Since raising them up they don't stick out as far as well but are still usable as a step.

So, what you did was turn perfectly good running boards into rock rails. Do you have skid plates on your underside? I suspect not. So now, you have generic rock rails, but no skid plates.

They can still be used as running boards which was still my main purpose. I just wanted them closer to the body. As I said before I live on a gravel road and they still serve to block my lower doors from getting dinged up. My truck, my choice.

Us short (5'7") and old (77) like them just fine the way they are....much better than what they put stock on the Gen5 Rangers
