Hi all, I carry a firearm when I drive and am looking for an option for a safe which will fit in the center console or hidden glove box of the car, ideally with a way to attach to the vehicle and open quickly (ie fingerprint option). Hidden glove would be the most preferred but I fear it’s too small to try and mount anything securely. Hoping this should at least deter attempts at theft. The firearm in question is a handgun. Thanks in advance.

What @c5ken said is important. I have a console vault for rear seat if I ever needed to put a valuable away say going into a gun restricted zone (school). Vaultek makes a slider with fingerprint that has a universal seat mount too. I have a Vaultek Slider mounted to my bedroom nightstand for quick access

Completely agree and I do carry on my person at all times when legally allowed. Just looking for something I can keep a firearm in my vehicle and not need to worry about it when I cannot physically carry. My line of work takes me into not so nice areas where I spend long periods of time in my truck. Will check out the Vaultek slider, thank you!

I'm having the same thoughts with regards to secure storage for a firearm. I was hoping the back seat would have space big enough for a PCC or an AR underneath, but ford wasn't that gracious.

Unfortunately the center console "vault" looks about as secure as just locking the glove box. Only a small piece of metal holds the door shut and I'm sure it can be defeated pretty easily. Not sure I'd want to pay $300-400 for that.

The rear seat vault seems a bit more discreet but probably suffers from the same problem and it costs $100 more. I'd probably just look into a lockable box with a chain you can wrap around a piece of metal. Still not a very secure solution but you also aren't shelling out hundreds of dollars for it.

Had my Glock-43 in the larger glovebox in a kydex appendix carry holster. Fit fine and was acceptable if needed. However the lock on the glovebox is junk.

Unfortunately it becomes a question of; how many hundreds of $ are you willing to spend on "(slightly/maybe?) secure storage" to protect a pistol that is probably worth the same or less than the vault you're installing?

Say you have a $450 pistol and install a $400 console vault. Your truck gets broken into and they defeat the console vault...now you're out $850, the "vault" didn't work and you still need to buy a new pistol.

This was one feature I really loved about the new Tacoma with the half cab. There is an entire lockable storage locker behind the seats that would hold any long gun you want to put in it. No clue how secure it is but at least they give you the large lockable storage if you need it, from the factory.

This is a great point, however my counterpoint is that I would be concerned about a firearm legally obtained in my name being stolen from some of the not so nice areas I travel to. The financial implications seem secondary to the possible legal implications of having a stolen gun in your name used for something less than legal.
Coming from 2 Tacomas, couldn’t do the new 4 banger but they were always strong on storage.

Yeah the below seat space is honestly atrocious even considering it’s a midsize. My long guns do fit very nicely in the floor boards of the back seat though. Just can’t seem to find a solution to a handgun that’s secure and easy to access. Agree that a “lock” that can be picked in less than one minute doesn’t count for anything. Disappointing there aren’t more options.

Yeah totally understand, that's the conundrum. Thankfully as long as you report it stolen, you shouldn't face any legal issues, especially if you at least attempted to keep it secure. But still, no one wants their gun stolen and used in some crime.

I originally ordered the rear seat vault, although I ended up buying a different truck that didn't have it. In a way I'm glad I didn't spend $400 on that option, especially because I was hoping it would be a bit larger to hold at least my PCC w/ folding brace for camping trips. There are some nice options if you decide to add a camper shell but that's a whole new expense.

For now I'm just going to use a lockbox that i have with a cable-lock that i can attach under a seat. Not that it can't also be defeated quickly, but it also only cost me $40.
