I had seen this on a couple of YouTube videos, and it seemed like a simple mod that improves the look over the long factory antenna.
It was only $5 on Amazon and seems to fit well. Good reception as well, didn’t notice a difference.

Do these affect key fob range or is that pinging off something else?

That pinging off a antenna that's close to the rear window mounted on the back wall.

it does affect DAB and radio reception. I noticed in a rural area where I have DAB disappearing in a square mile area, and having FM with noise. putting the short antenna makes DAB disappearing for about 4 square miles area and FM does not receive either

I've always wondered what signals use the longer antenna. Is it just the radio? I've always been hesitant to replace because I didn't know which services use it.

Hmmmm......very odd. I'm just southwest of the Houston metro area, and I still have strong AM/FM signals with the little stubby. Tried multiple channels just to make sure.
Will watch it for a few days and see if it changes.

I’ve been using the little stubby antenna since September and have had zero issues with FM reception. Also it doesn’t scrape on my garage door opening.

the gain is different, there is no doubt about that. it's physics.
now the rest goes with just how strong signal you have in your area...

Most of the radio station broadcast towers are located southwest of Houston. Broadcast signals very strong in the area. You may not even need an antenna. I used to live in the area but now live north of Houston and need antennas to get all the Houston stations.
It would be interesting to see how well the short antenna works while traveling.
