This applies to aluminum spacers which are not properly sealed. My RR has a Go Fast Campers Topper and their spacers have a problem for sure. This is after just 8 weeks and some mountain passes with deicer on the road surface.

That’s what road salt does to uncoated aluminum.
They are clear anodized and the aluminum parts didn’t show any signs of corrosion. It was the bolts. The white stuff at the bottom of the cavities was salt, which cleaned up fine. I completely encased them with silicone sealer to eliminate any future “fluid” entry.

I read your post on the GFC campers forum. Great job on the silicone on the trim pieces! I am going to seal mine too before I install my tonneau cover. I hadn't considered masking, now I will.

I am likely going to make my own stake pocket shims from Delrin and seal the pockets too. Delrin certainly won't be a strong as your aluminum shims, but should be fine for a tonneau. Most people don't even use shims for just a tonneau, but I want it to be strong.

I talked to GFC about a set of shims last week, they are considering. I know they have said "no" in the past, but we'll see. Buckle Up Off-Road makes a set, but they won't be available for another 4 to 6 weeks apparently.

You also need to go to stainless hardware. Looks like galvanized allen bolts were used in place of stainless steel hardware.🇺🇸

D. Sampson: Delrin or acetyl will be fine for your use, I would prefer it over aluminum since it is crazy strong and almost completely inert. And no worries about dissimilar metal corrosion. If you are machining them, use an anti-static spray or you will have a huge amount of stuck particles on your work piece and mill.

Check the type of silicone you used. When I was on the 4Runner group everyone used it for roof racks. Come to find out silicone is acidic and ate through guys roofs

Appreciate the info, shoot, I didn't know. Come to find out, the one I have on order is an acetoxy silicone. I think I'll return it for a neutral cure silicone instead just in case.

Yeah, I've worked with it often over the years and I never heard of it till the 4runner crowd posted it up. one poor guy removed the interior liner looking for leaks and saw day light

Galvanic corrosion is why I'm hesitant to put aluminum skid plates on my RR. I don't know if that's what your experiencing, but you might want to research it.

I made these shims out of Delrin hard plastic. Just for some extra support under my tonneau. Not super pretty, but worked for me.

What are the Dimensions of these??

thanks
I used 3/4" thick Delrin plastic. The shims for the front four pockets were 2 7/8" x 1 1/4". The shims for the back two pockets were slightly less thick, maybe 1/8" less. I didn't write down the dimensions of the last two, I apologize. The last two thinner ones were a pain in the butt for me, I hade to hack away some of the Delrin.

I have a unused set of the "Go Fast Camper" shims as well. When I get a chance, I'll take some measurements of those and post back.
