Figured I'd put this in-depth post together about my experience installing a digital rearview mirror and the tips & tricks I learned a long the way.

To start, I got this mirror because of reduced/no visibility from my 8" Bille Bars system and an incoming rooftop tent (btw - highly recommend Billie Bars for these trucks). Did some research online and landed on the Wolfbox. Very happy with the results, but Install was kind of a pain. I am not reposting Wolfbox's instructions - this is just the specifics to install on late model Rangers.

  • If you want to mount this outside somewhere on the bed (mine is attached to one of my crossbars), then you will need this extension kit to the camera.
  • If you want to hardwire this mirror (recommended for a very clean look, but not necessary), then you will need this hardwire kit.
  • If hardwiring inside the cab, you will need this Micro3 fuse tap.
  • If running this inside the bed or to easily organize your wire to the camera, pick up several packs of these clips.

Step 1: To run a cable through the cab to the bed you will need to locate the grommet behind the rear driver's side seat. Other threads showed this as not being possible unless you took out the seats, but I was able to remove the trim shown in the first picture below and access it easily (2nd pic). Remove the grommet by pulling firmly on it. I poked a hole in the grommet just big enough to pass the head of the wire through. 3rd pic shows it reinstalled with the wire through. This thread was a big help with figuring out wire passthrough points.

2. Thread the camera wire through the passthrough hole in the cab. This is where you can get creative. I was able to push enough wire through until I could grab it from above the bed, but you could also tape it to a wire coat hanger to make it a bit easier. This is where you have several options to get the wire to the bed. There are the large passthroughs at the bottom of the bed (1st pic), and then there are smaller holes at the top of the bed (2nd pic). I opted to use the latter since I was running the wire along top of the bed already.

3. Figure out the general mounting location of your camera and route the cable to the camera using the clips I linked before or any other method you prefer.
I have a tonneau cover, so I cut out a small piece of my weatherseal foam under the lip of it to run my cable through cleanly. 2nd pic shows the red wire that is used to tap into a reverse light if you want reverse lines to appear on the mirror when in reverse. Since we all have pretty good reverse cameras already I cut the wire. 3rd pic shows the final mounting location of my camera.
I would recommend not mounting permanently yet until you power the system on and are happy with the image.

4. Start routing the USB-C end of the camera wire through the cabin trim pieces. I found it easier to do this when I popped off the weatherseal around the door. the goal is to get the wires up to where your rearview mirror is, so make sure you create enough slack to work. When the wire is past the A Pillar trim you can tuck it under the headliner to completely hide it.

**At this point you can install the mirror display itself over top your existing mirror and plug it into the cigarette lighter in the glovebox and you'd be complete. If you want to hardwire it for a completely wire-free look, continue on. Wolfbox gives multiple ways to hardwire this mirror - I chose to not have the cameras record when the vehicle is off. If you would like that feature, refer to their instructions when wiring.

5a. You will need to run power from one of two places: your fuse box in the engine bay or the fuse box in the cab. I opted to use the one in the cab since it was much easier to access.
*If you would like to access the box in the cab, refer to the first picture below. The yellow, red, and black wire is from the hardwire kit and passing through the hole shown in picture 2. There will be a large rubber grommet inside the engine bay that can be removed, then you can stick something through to make it easier to find the pass through point from inside the cab. I originally was going to wire this to the box in the engine bay but ultimately reversed course when I learned about the box inside the cab.

5b. **To access the box inside the cab, pull off this trim shown in the first picture. The fuse box is directly behind.

6. Locate fuses #28 (constant power --> RED wire from hardwire kit) & #21/22 (accessory power --> YELLOW wire from hardwire kit). Refer to this thread for more info.

PXL_20241130_213648050.jpg

7. At this point you will need to connect the Micro3 fuse tap to the yellow wire. Before doing so, see if it fits into the slot. Mine did not, so I had to shave it down until it got in there.

8. Connect the ground to a nearby point. I used this bolt:

9. Push the fuse taps into their slots. Below is what it will look like when wired correctly:

PXL_20241207_233111716.jpg

10. Run the black wire with the power connector up through the trim, under the headliner as before, and plug into the mirror. Clean everything up and you will have a final product like this:

I would recommend watching videos of this mirror in action. There are plenty on YouTube.

Did you leave yours strapped to the original mirror? Or, is it permanently attached somehow?

Great writeup. But wouldnt it have been easier to mount to the roof of the cab?

It could be, yeah. The reason I went with it on my bars is because I'll put a rooftop tent on it in the spring. If I had it on the roof, half of my view could be the tent depending on the angle mounted.
Another reason I went with it on the bar was to get it as lined up as possible with where my actual rear view mirror was, so it seemed like I was actually looking through the rear view still.
I have seen others put it on the roof though, it's all preference.

Ahh, that makes incredible sense. I suppose if no tent was going up, the roof would be optimal.

Did your kit come with a three prong fuse tap? My hardwired kit did not have one. It had two bags of duplicate fuse taps - only four different taps.

I linked the micro 3 tap you'll need in my writeup

I plan to get it and mount the rear camera on the cab roof. With the rear camera on at night do you have problems with glare? I am only getting this to give me a better view of what is behind me while I"m driving

Definitely a bit of glare from headlights at night, and not the highest resolution either as it tries to take in as much light as possible. Try looking up videos on YouTube for a good view of it.

Ok, I got it in…thank you for the info!

Quick question…I know nothing about fuses, amps, etc. so I am wondering do I use the 15a fuse that came with the tap and then insert the 5a fuse in the open slot? I want to make sure I don’t mess up the car or dashcam. Thanks!

You will be using the 15A fuse that came with it... The reason I ordered that specific tap and linked was so that I wouldn't have to buy a fuse tap and a fuse seperately.
